The Bird's Nest

Submitted by Bobby on Thu, 21/08/2008 - 05:30.

We had no tickets, so we took a chance. Benno, Ryan, Philip (our translator) and I headed into the venue. More about that in a second, but more history this time with Philip.

What goes around comes around and a good deed in my book never goes unnoticed. Back in 2005, when I raced in three ITU Points Races in Asia (one in South Korea and two in China), I had many challenges along the way. Between the first race in Seorak, South Korea and Jiujuyguan, China I could not get my bike onto the plane .... apparently the bike box was too big. Anyway, I ended up in this middle of this market trying to find my way to the train station and hopefully get my bike and myself into a train headed for Jiujuyguan and the Gobi Desert. It was a nightmare and nobody spoke English. Anyway, a Chinese student called Philip spotted that I needed help. He came to the rescue and sorted everything .... Years later Philip always maintained contact, so a couple of months ago Philip recieved an email from me inviting him to be our team translator for the Olympic Games!

The lads did not seem overly motivated about the Bird's Nest, but for me it was a must. The only person missing was my great friend Ernie "The Genius" Gruhn ... he like me really appreciates track and field. I drove a hard bargain and managed to get a ring side ticket right on the edge of the track. A quick visit to the shop, two pints, chips and hotdogs and I was in my element!

Excellence is a word the genius uses a lot. I too appreciate excellence, which there was plenty of. I called Ernie and told him where I was ... he had been in the same position in Sydney, so he knew what I was talking about! We made a pact that we'll be sitting side by side in London. The women's hammer final and podium celebrations brought tears to the Belarus girl's eyes on the sound of her national anthem .... but not only her ... me too. I was impressed. As for Bolt breaking Michael Johnsons 200m record, it was an experience and adventure that I will never forget.

There are some moments in life that are priceless .... Olympic Track and Field on a night like this is one of them in my book!
