In October 1999 following a successful season in America, Bobby travelled alone to Stellenbosch, South Africa (Bobby had read about Stellenbosch in Triathlete Magazine) where he spent a winter focussed on training. This was the start of what Bobby would later describe Stellenbosch to be his “home away from home”.

Prior to triathlon Bobby was an accomplished middle distance runner, but swimming was his first love. Bobby recorded personal bests of 25 seconds for the 50m frontcrawl and 27.8 seconds for the 50m butterfly at the age of 17 without any formal coaching or membership of a swim team At that time top swim teams were mainly to be found in the major cities and not in the midlands. (1988-1997).
During these early years Bobby voluntarily coached many young swimmers and The Piranha Swim Team based in his hometown of Portarlington. He coached two underage national swimming champions (1992-1998).
